State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will play with nuts and nets and that they will read and write short-vowel words.
Literacy Activities
Play with nuts and nets
- Engage the children in reading the A Nut is Not a Net target text (see below).
- Show the children a nut (be careful of potential nut allergies) and a net (from orange or onion packaging).
- Hold up the nut and ask, “Is this a net?”
- Hold up the net and ask, “Is this a nut?”
- Tell the children that a nut is not a net.
- Let the children put a nut on a net and a net on a nut.
- Let the child put a nut in a net.
- Tell the children that a net cannot go in a nut.
Write about the activity
- Let the children label the nut and the net.
- Have the children write target words from dictation (e.g., net, nut, net).
- Help the children write the sentence “A net is not a nut” and "A nut is not a net.”
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- With word-building cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowels.
