State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will pick a snack and read texts with short vowel words such as snack, stick, get, and pick.

Literacy Activities
Pick a stick

Read the text A Snack Looks Like a Stick (see below) with the children.
Have the children pick a pretzel stick snack.

Pick a snack

Engage the children in reading the text Pick a Snack (see below).
Set out snacks that are sticks and snacks that are not sticks (e.g., pretzel sticks and crackers) or pictures of them.
Show the children that some snacks are sticks and some are not sticks.
Set out craft sticks and snacks that can go on sticks (banana, marshmallow, bit of cake or bread) (optional)
Let the children pick a snack.
Ask them about their snacks:
- What snack did you pick?
- Did you like the snack you got to pick?
- Did you get a snack on a stick? (optional)
Reread the text, fading support.
