A Fun Run

Objective

Materials:

  • 4 tubs or other containers 
  • Bun and Sun picture cards –at least 1 per child (see below)
  • Letter cards (see below) 
  • Can You Run? target text (see below) 

State and model the objective
Tell the children they will run to collect a sun or a bun and they will read and write words ending with -un: fun, run, bun, sun. 

Practice the skill within an activity

Run to collect buns and suns 

  • Divide the children into 2 equal sized teams: the bun team and the sun team.
  • Have the children line up with their team behind a starting line, placing a container for each team nearby.
  • At the other end of the racing area, place 2 containers, one filled with sun pictures (enough for each child on the sun team) and one filled with bun pictures (enough for each child on the bun team). Make sure there are an equal number of buns and suns.
  • Have the child at the front of each team’s line run to their container, pick up either a bun or a sun and race back to put their bun or sun in their team’s container. Have everyone shout, “It’s fun to run!”
  • Repeat the process as each person in the team takes a turn.
     

Apply the skill:

Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • Let the children make a target word (e.g., run) from letter cards (see below) and then let them make different words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel.
    • Change the beginning sound(s): sun → run; fun → bun
    • Change the vowel sound: fun → fin; run → ran; bun → bin
    • Change the ending sound(s): bun → bud; fun → fur; run → rub
  • For each of the words the children make, have them produce the sounds for each letter and then blend those sounds back into the word

Read target words in a text

  • Have the children underline the words that end in -un in the target text Can You Run (see below). 
  • Read the Can You Run text to the children.
  • Engage the children in reading the text simultaneously with you.
  • Read the Can You Run text again, fading support. 

Write about the activity using target words and phrases

  • Display target words on a word wall (i.e., fun, run, bun, sun) and then engage the children in one of the following: 
    • Provide the children with sentence completion prompts in an interactive writing routine to create a text about their experience with the activity. For example:
      • It was ____ (fun) to _____ (run). 
      • There were two teams: the _____ (sun) team and the ______ (bun) team. 
      • We had to ____ (run) to pick up a _____ (bun) or a _____ (sun).
      • We had _____ (fun).
    • Re-read the target text (see below) and allow the children to write their own version of the text.

Objective

Materials

Activity: Fun Run

  • Find an area big enough for you and your child to run.  
  • Place two of the containers (one containing all of the suns and one containing all of the buns) at one end of the running area, and the remaining two at the other end. Decide who will collect the buns and who will collect the suns.
  • The aim of the game is to race to move all of the buns and all of the suns from one container to the other. Every time you place a bun or a sun in the new container shout, "It's fun to run!" Whoever completes the task first wins the game.
  • Help your child read the target text Can You Run?.
  • Help your child write sentences on the back of the target text, explaining how to play the game (e.g.; Run to get a bun or a sun. Run back.  Drop the sun or bun. It is fun to run.)
