Overview
The children will say a tap and clap chant as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with tap, such as clap, flap, snap, and trap.

Literacy Activities
Tap, Tap, Clap chant

  • Read the book Rap A Tap Tap by Leo and Diane Dillon to the children (optional), pointing out the words that rhyme with tap.
  • Invite the children to join you in clapping then tapping.
  • Teach the children the Tap, Tap, Clap chant as you chant the line first and the children echo it back.
  • Have the children clap and tap with the chant, changing the style as desired (e.g., faster, slower).
  • Point out that clap and tap rhyme and help the children think of other words that rhyme with tap.

More Practice
Act out words that rhyme with tap

  • Call out a word that rhymes with tap and do a related action then have the children echo the word and copy the action.
  • Repeat with a few other words that rhyme with tap (e.g., flap - flap arms; clap - clap hands; snap - snap fingers), pointing out the words that rhyme.  
  • Let the children take turns calling and acting out words that rhyme with tap for the class to copy.

Recognize rhyming words 

  • Have the children repeat a set of two words (e.g., tap, clap).
  • Ask the children to show you thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme (support as needed).
  • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., cap, strap; gap, come; lap, trap; sap, map; chap, shoe; nap, rap).

Activity: Tap and Clap

  • Teach your child the Tap, Tap, Clap chant to the rhythm of the "Boom Chicka Boom" chant (this is an echo chant, so you will say a line, and your child will repeat it back).
  • Add tapping and clapping actions and change style as desired.
  • Together, think of as many words that rhyme with tap as you can.
  • Say a word that rhymes with tap to your child and invite them to make up an action to go with it that you can do together.
  • Repeat with other words that rhyme with tap.
