Application Process
The following steps are adapted from the Application for Graduate Study Checklist. A downloadable version of the below checklist is provided for your convenience.
- Complete the application for admission to graduate study through BYU Graduate Studies.
- Agree to the Honor Code and obtain an ecclesiastical endorsement. All applicants should start the process early to obtain an endorsement. All applicants need an endorsement interview with a bishop and a stake president (or local religious leader and BYU chaplain) before your application can be fully considered. Current or continuing BYU students applying for graduate school must also obtain a new endorsement. Start this process at endorse.byu.edu.
- Submit your unofficial transcript. See instructions on the Graduate Studies website for how to upload your transcript to your application. Include transcripts from all of the institutions you have attended.
- Request two letters of recommendation. Two letters of recommendation from academic sources are required on the online application. If you have teaching experience, at least one of these should be from a member of school administration, e.g., principal or district representative. You will need the recommenders' names and email addresses.
- A well-written statement of intent. Please carefully review the guidelines provided in the application for instructions on what to include in this statement.
- Submit a résumé. Applicants must include a current résumé with the application.
- (International students only) Submit English Proficiency scores. Please see the English Proficiency page from Graduate Studies for more information.
- (Optional) Use BYU’s institution code (-4019) at the time of your GRE test if you wish to submit GRE scores in addition to the application.
- Schedule an interview. Upon review of your application, at the discretion of the MSE graduate committee, you may be contacted for a video panel interview.
Submit your application no later than 11:59 p.m. (MST) by February 1. Students are admitted every even-numbered year beginning in the summer term. All application materials must be submitted online to the Graduate Studies office, which will forward items required by the department. Applicants may check the status of their application at any time.
