Program Overview
BS in Physical Education Teacher Education
Overview
As a future physical educator, you inspire and guide youth through the light of Jesus Christ. You will help them develop strong minds, bodies, and spirits while deepening their understanding of the sacred role of the body in our journey toward perfection and eternal life. Through coursework, practicum experiences, and student teaching, you will learn to:
- Apply research-based and gospel-centered methodologies to engage students effectively.
- Introduce students to a variety of physical activities available in their local communities.
- Collaborate with faculty and peers on physical education research and projects, fostering connections and a sense of belonging within the BYU covenant community.
This program will prepare you to make a meaningful impact on students' lives, equipping them with lifelong skills for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
PETE Experiential Learning Award
The purpose of the PETE Experiential Learning Award is twofold: 1) to support undergraduate students who wish to participate in ongoing research under the direction of one or more of the PETE faculty with the intended outcome of a publishable scholarly paper with students as co-authors, and 2) to provide undergraduate students with a non-research experiential learning opportunity. Prerequisites
In order to apply to the major, you must first complete the following:
Declare the PETE Pre-Major
See a program advisor in the Educational Advisement Center to assist with the major change and review GPA and test scores.
Apply for fingerprinting and FBI background check
View Fingerprinting to learn more. Allow for 1-3 weeks for the fingerprints to be processed.
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the program, you must first complete the following:
Complete 64.5-67.5 major credits
See a program advisor in the Educational Advisement Center to assist with creating an academic plan.
Complete a full year paid internship OR 14-week student teaching

Apply for licensure with the Utah State Board of Education
The Advisement Center will email students instructions to complete the licensure process with the Utah State Board of Education upon graduation.

These are the steps to apply to the major, there is one round of admission each year (Feb 15):

Start a Physical Education program application
Access the Educator application system and register for free. Complete the admissions checklist in the application and submit by Feb 15th.
Submit the application before the deadline
Applications are due on February 15th for entry in fall semester.
Order a teaching uniform
After you’ve been accepted into the program you’ll need to purchase a teaching uniform.
