Break Brown Bread
Lesson Plan
Target Words:

Materials:
- Brown bread slices (can be dried out to break more easily)—1 for each group of 2-4 children
- Small brooms and dustpan (if unavailable, use paper broom graphic below)
State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that today they are going to break up the brown bread and then brush it up with a broom as they practice the /br/ blend in words such as break, brown and bread.
Literacy Activities
Break Bread
- Give each group of children a piece of brown bread.
- Have the children break it up and drop the crumbs on the table.
- The children can brush the crumbs up with a broom (real or graphic below).
- Throughout the activity emphasize words and phrases containing the target /br/ blend.
More Practice
Read target words
- Ask the children if they hear the /br/ blend in various words (e.g., brisk, clasp, bracket, bracelet).
- Along with teacher’s assistance, if necessary, have the children make a list of words that begin with the br blend.
Write about the activity using target words/patterns
- In 2-3 sentences, have the children write what they did (e.g.; “Today, we broke brown bread. Then we used a broom to brush it up.”).

Objective
Read, write, and identify words beginning with the br blend.
Materials
- A broom
- Objects that start with /br/ (e.g., bread, brush, branch, bracelet)
- Brown crayon or marker
Activity: Brush Up with a Broom
- Before the activity, invite your child to help you gather objects that begin with the /br/ blend.
- Spread the objects on the floor in a room or on a sidewalk or driveway outside.
- Take turns using the broom to brush an objects into a corner or pile as you say the name of the object.
- When all of the objects are gathered up, have your child identify an object and you write the word on a piece of paper, leaving space for your child to copy the word.
- Have your child copy the words, then use a brown crayon or marker to underline the beginning /br/ in each word.
- Use the words as word cards and scatter them face up on the floor so your child can read the words and then brush them into a pile with the broom.
