Student Teaching/Internships
In order to graduate, students with the following majors need to complete student teaching OR an internship:
- Elementary Education
- Early Childhood Education
- Special Education
- Physical Education/Coaching
- All Secondary Education Majors
Student Teaching
Student teaching is a one-semester experience in which the student completes the student-teaching experience in an actual school environment.
Responsibilities
- Managing and teaching a class under the direct supervision of the classroom's teacher
- Assisting in curriculum planning
- Assisting with various other teaching responsibilities
- Be available for after school conferences and training

Depending on the major, some candidates may be required to teach in two different areas. If completing a teaching minor, additional placement(s)
will be required. Contact your department for more details.
Internships
Internships are a full school-year experience in which the student is hired by one of BYU's partnership school districts to be the teacher.
Please note that not all students are eligible for the internship option. Contact your advisor for more information.
Responsibilities
- Organizing and teaching a class
- Curriculum planning
- Classroom management
- Learning assessments
- Fulfill contract signed with school district

- 1/2 regular teacher's salary

Note: that students with teaching minors are required to student teach as part of their teaching minor.
Application
How to Apply
- Go to https://educator.byu.edu/ and login.
- Click on the Pre-Clinical menu.
- Scroll to the bottom and complete the checklist of items for the final clinical experience.
- Once those items are completed, meet with your academic advisor for final review. The program
coordinator will make the final approval of your application.
First Day Orientation Meeting
Student teachers are all required to attend first-day orientation. Reach
out to your program supervisor for the time and location.

Please contact your BYU program Liaison/Supervisor to confirm your Student Teaching placement
location and mentor teacher information.
