Overview
In the Elementary Education program at BYU, you will prepare to teach and serve with a Christ-centered commitment to compassion, equity, and civic engagement. Guided by the example of Jesus Christ and the principles of the BYU-Public School Partnership, you will strive for academic excellence while inspiring others through service, integrity, and a sincere love for God and neighbors.
Throughout the program, you will develop the capacity to:
- Ensure that all learners have access to meaningful educational opportunities.
- Help students understand their roles in a diverse society and their responsibilities as informed citizens.
- Teach with high expectations while fostering caring relationships, creating a supportive and stimulating learning environment for every child.
- Encourage students to become compassionate, engaged members of their communities.
Through reflective practice, hands-on field experiences, and spiritual growth, you will develop as a dedicated steward of education—deeply committed to the well-being of each learner, school, and community. Prerequisites
In order to apply to the major, you must first complete the following:
Declare the Elementary Education Pre-Major
Attend a program orientation
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the program, you must first complete the following:
Complete 68-69 major credits
No grade lower than a C in any program course
Maintain good academic standing with no grade below a C in any program course.
Complete a full year paid internship OR 14-week student teaching
Pass the Praxis Elementary Education Multiple Subjects exam
Apply for licensure with the Utah State Board of Education
The Advisement Center will email students instructions to complete the licensure process with the Utah State Board of Education upon graduation.

These are the steps to apply to the major, there are two rounds of admission each year:
Complete the Prerequisites

Start an Elementary Education program application
Access the Educator application system and register for free. Complete the admissions checklist in the application and submit by Feb 15th or Oct 1st.
Apply for fingerprinting and FBI background check
View Fingerprinting to learn more. Allow of 1-3 weeks for the fingerprints to be processed.
Complete a graduation plan
Visit with a program advisor in the Education Advisement Center (175 MCKB) to create a grad plan.
