Paper Marbling and Book Making
Session 3: Grades 4-6
In this session, participants will make a single signature booklet and a single page booklet. Participants will also create marbled paper using a carrageenan sizing and water based paints. Decorative papers will be used for the inside of the book and marbled paper for the outside cover. We will discuss how teachers can acquire affordable materials for this project. Connections will be made to language arts, history, and science. Everyone enjoys writing in books, especially those that are self made. This is a great project to do with your students.
Jane DeGroff currently serves as a BTSALP Visual Art Specialist in the North Sanpete School District. While working on her BFA in printmaking at Brigham Young University, she was able to work in the library’s book repair unit. There she learned the basics of book construction. Jane enjoys sharing the art of paper decorating and book construction with kids, and has carried out book projects in many fifth grade classrooms. She loves seeing the delight on the faces of the students when they have created their own book. Jane is also a textile artist. She is known for her exquisite shibori textiles, and enjoys teaching shibori workshops.
